Quality & testing (COAs)
This is the lesson that separates people who understand the space from people who guess at it. When someone says a supplier is "trustworthy," it should mean one concrete thing: they test their material and can prove it.Here's how that actually works.
What is a COA?
COA stands for Certificate of Analysis. It's a document from a testing laboratory that reports what's actually in a batch of material — most importantly its purity and identity.
- Identity — is this actually the peptide it claims to be, and not something else entirely?
- Purity — what percentage of the sample is the real compound, versus impurities? Good peptides commonly report ≥98–99% purity.
- Some COAs also report water content, endotoxins, or related impurities depending on the tests requested.
How testing labs work
Independent analytical laboratories run instrumental methods — most commonly HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) and mass spectrometry — to separate and measure the components of a sample. A reputable supplier sends a sample of each batch to such a lab, gets the COA back, reviews it, and only then decides the material is fit to sell.
This is the "after-market testing" your trusted RUO suppliers do that direct-from-China buyers skip. The good suppliers don't just trust the manufacturer's label — they independently verify each batch before it reaches the customer.
Anatomy of a COA — what to actually check
Two tests carry almost all the weight, and people routinely misread the most important one.
- Purity (HPLC). High-performance liquid chromatography separates the sample and reports what share is the target peptide versus impurities. Useful — but remember: a purity number says how clean a sample is, not that it's the right molecule.The widely-quoted “98%” figure is a commercial convention, not a regulatory standard, because “research grade” isn't a regulated category.
- Identity (mass spec).Mass spectrometry confirms the compound actually has the molecular weight (and ideally the sequence) of the peptide it claims to be. This is the check most people skip — and it's the one that catches a vial of something that isn't what it says at all. Purity without identity is close to meaningless.
Beyond those two, run down this checklist:
- Lot/batch matches the vial.A COA describes one specific batch. If the lot on the paper doesn't match the lot on the vial, that COA doesn't describe your product — this is the most common sleight of hand.
- Net peptide content — not the label.A vial labeled “10mg” can be meaningfully less than 10mg of actual peptide, because peptides ship with bound water, salts, and counterions that add weight. The label figure overstates what's really there, and the net number is what your concentration math should use.
- Third-party lab, not in-house. An independent lab has no reason to flatter the product. A recognized third-party report carries more weight than in-house numbers.
- A recent date. A test from two years ago on a batch you just bought tells you little.
Red flags that mean slow down:a purity number with no mass-spec identity check, a lot number that doesn't match the vial, a bare screenshot with no lab letterhead or method listed, or a vendor who can't produce a COA at all. Any one of those is a reason to pause.

Why this matters: in an unregulated market, the COA is your single best tool. A supplier that (a) tests every batch, (b) readily shares the COA when you ask, and (c) labels the actual batch on the vial you receive is doing the diligence that the gray market almost never forces them to do.
How to spot a trustworthy source
- They test every batch and can share the COA on request
- The COA matches the batch/lot you actually receive
- Established track record, real community reputation, responsive support
- They stand behind the product if something is off — no vanishing act
- Consistent quality across multiple orders over time
